Labor of Love: Strengthening Care for Families

Whether you are preparing for conception, navigating pregnancy, or adjusting to life with a newborn, support makes a difference. Families deserve more than one-time help or a list of providers. They need care that surrounds them at every stage, from personal practices that nurture wellbeing to doulas who walk alongside them to a wider network of trusted community partners.

At Bloom Baby Doulas, our three branches of work—supporting families, supporting doulas, and fostering community—come together to ensure families have consistent and connected care from preconception through parenthood. Families are held not only by their doula but also by the collective wisdom, resources, and advocacy we cultivate through our community partnerships.

Strengthening Care Through Community Partnerships

You’ve probably heard the phrase “It takes a village,” a million times, but it can still feel abstract. At Bloom Baby Doulas, we make it real. Genuine relationships with trusted providers and local businesses are central to how we support families.

When you connect with Bloom Baby Doulas, you step into a circle of care designed to meet a wide range of needs. At the center are the families we serve. Surrounding them are our doulas, who bring presence, knowledge, and compassion. Surrounding our doulas are more layers of support: ongoing learning, mentorship, and connections with local providers who share our commitment to family wellbeing.

This structure allows care to extend outward in a ripple effect, creating coordinated and personal support that meets families where they are.

Community partnerships bring families:

  • Trust you can feel. Families are connected with providers their doula knows and trusts.

  • Seamless referrals. Families are guided toward providers by someone who understands their needs.

  • Holistic support. Specialists such as lactation consultants, counselors, bodyworkers, and educators are part of the care team.

  • Consistency. Partners share Bloom Baby Doulas’ philosophy, so families experience care that feels steady and aligned.

Through these partnerships, families gain more than access to services. They gain a living network of support that evolves with their needs.

Pause and consider: When you think about your journey so far, who has been most present for you? Who makes you feel seen and supported? Who do you consider part of your “village” right now? Who might you want to add?

Concentric Circles of Support

To help families identify & strengthen their personal care network, we created the Beyond Self-Care: Concentric Circles of Support worksheet. Instead of only asking “How can I take better care of myself?” it encourages families to ask, “Who is in my corner, and how can I grow those layers of support?”

The worksheet helps identify support in simple layers:

  • The Center – You. Your own practices such as rest, journaling, creative hobbies, therapy, or prayer.

  • Inner Layer. People closest to you, like a partner, close friend, childcare, or doula.

  • Middle Layer. Wider supports such as extended family, parent groups, neighbors, or local organizations.

  • Outer Layer. Larger systems like healthcare providers, community programs, workplaces, or public resources.

Reflection questions help families notice where they are strong and where new connections could be built.

Closing Gaps and Personalized Referrals

When taking a closer look, families often notice gaps in their care, such as needing a feeding specialist, a mental health provider, or a bodyworker who aligns with their values. At Bloom Baby Doulas, we do more than provide a list of names. We’ve built ongoing relationships with providers and help doulas learn directly from them, so that referrals are warm, meaningful, and trusted.

Families can connect with these resources in two ways:

  • Through their doula, who offers referrals based on a deep understanding of both the family and the provider.

  • Directly through Bloom Baby Doulas, where families can receive introductions to trusted partners, even before (or after working with a doula.

This week I also had the privilege of sharing our the Beyond Self-Care: Concentric Circles of Support exercise with the Perinatal Professionals of North Jersey, inviting providers to reflect on their own circles and the layers surrounding the families they serve. While each care professionals may fit into a particular layer of support, they can also help families reach into other layers with personal referrals.

Partnerships in Action

Strong community partnerships don’t just help to close gaps in support, they ensure that the care families receive is not random or transactional but coordinated and relational. At Bloom Baby Doulas, we are always looking for opportunities to collaborate and help families access education, guidance, and community-based support.

One of our longest-standing partnerships is with Milkwell Lactation and Feeding Solutions. Together we co-host:

These retreats bring the benefits of doula care into a shared setting, giving families accessible opportunities to learn, restore, and connect.

Community Advocacy and Fundraising

Bloom Baby Doulas also works to foster connections with broader systems of support for families through community advocacy and fundraising. Two examples of this work are our annual participation in Postpartum Support International’s largest awareness and fundraising campaign, The Climb, and our exciting partnership this year with Angela Beth Studio to present "Hope for the Holidays." This collaborative fundraiser through Foster Love benefits children in foster care and their families.

Several of our community partners—including Mama Bear PT, The Mom Chat, Balance Chiropractic, Her Plum, and A Work of Heart Counseling—are joining us in this effort by contributing to our virtual gift bags, as a thank-you for donations of $100 or more.
